Visitor Programmes
In the national parks, visitor streams are controlled in order to ensure a better protection of ecologically sensitive areas and draw the visitors’ attention to special attractions or representative parts of the national park.
Currently, there are no capacity problems so that there will be no limitations of visitor numbers in Austria at present and in the foreseeable future, as this has been the case in some parks in the USA, for example. Every year the teams of the national park administrations develop extensive and diversified programmes for visitors of all target groups and ages.Specially trained local national park guides show the visitors the most beautiful places and impart their knowledge to them. The variety of excursions and adventure walks on land and water ranges from one-hour tours to spending several days in the park. It goes without saying that national parks can also be visited without being accompanied by staff: After all, it is a primary goal of national parks to offer ‘spiritual and recreational opportunities’.
The visitor centres and education facilities provide detailed information about the particularities of the respective national parks; maps, brochures and practical equipment such as binoculars are also at the visitors’ disposal. For tourist matters the national park administrations collaborate with the regional associations and local tourist businesses. It is therefore possible to combine the visitor programmes of the national parks with other options such events of cultural or culinary nature.
In addition to the visitor services, all national parks offer events, seminars, symposia, etc. that are complementary to the educational programme for the public.
