Gesaeuse National Park
The Gesaeuse National Park along the river Enns gorge is the youngest of Austria’s national parks. Its nature is dominated by rocks, alpine pastures, forests and the wild waters of the river Enns. In addition to nature conservation and the exploration of ecosystems, recreation and environmental education are the key tasks of the Gesaeuse National Park.
Take your time! There is so much to discover. You can see some 90 species of breeding birds, as well as the European alpine marmot, chamois, roe deer, and red deer in the wild. About 50 orchid species, which count among the most beautiful creatures of the alpine flora, are present in our national park. All around the year, our varied summer and winter activities and special programmes for schools offer manifold opportunities to experience and get to know the unique natural landscape of the Gesaeuse with all one’s senses in the company of trained national park guides. Discover the secrets of life in a drop of water in the research workshop of the willow dome, or experience the diversity of nature on a guided adventure tour.
It is also one of the tasks of the Gesaeuse National Park to maintain and improve the habitats of endangered fauna and flora. These goals are reached by means of applied nature conservation research. Universities and renowned experts support the national park in the pursuit of its goals.
By consciously renouncing to economic uses of nature, the natural dynamism of our ecosystems shall be enhanced. Long-term research activities aim at observing the progress and gaining new results for practice.
Projects that are particularly oriented towards the protection of species and habitats make sure that the natural diversity is also conserved for future generations.
We have established special contacts with businesses in the region that share our ecological thinking and, thus, represent an important link to the local environment. Our partners in the Gesaeuse National Park Partnership are deeply rooted in the region and proud of their national park. They are always keen to inform guests about current events and projects.
Among the partners in this Gesaeuse National Park Partnership there are restaurants and inns, biologically run farms that offer farm-stay holidays, alpine huts, direct-marketing farmers, bee-keepers and craft businesses. All partners meet strict environmental standards and quality criteria.
